Scuba Diving

Though boasting some of the world’s most pristine and adventurous dive destinations, South Africa’s dive sites are relatively unspoiled by excess tourism.

The world-renowned sardine run takes place off the coast of the Transkei and Kwa-Zulu Natal, and South Africa’s coastline offers some of the most spectacular diving in the world.

The warm, tropical waters off Sodwana are not only home to the most southerly coral reefs in the world, but also boast an abundance of colourful fish, nudibranchs, whale sharks, turtles, dolphins and ragged-tooth sharks.

The renowned Aliwal Shoal off the KwaZulu Natal coast offers an array of diving activities including tiger shark dives, wreck, deep, shark, nitrox and underwater photography specialties.

The Cape Town region offers a range of diving experiences from diving amongst beautiful kelp forests, nudibranchs and anemones, to the more adventurous shark diving.

Rugby / Hockey

Especially since South Africa won the Rugby World Cup at Ellis Park in 2005 (followed by a repeat win in 2007), rugby is almost a religion amongst South Africans. Annually, South Africa jointly hosts two major international tournaments, the Tri-Nations (contested between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand) and the Super 15 (a club tournament involving the three Southern-hemisphere heavyweights). Every 12 years, the British and Irish Lions tour South Africa.

South Africa’s rugby stadia are amongst the best in the world and are well worth a visit, even if there is no game!
